Companies:
Spartan, Ltd and Polaris Group, Ltd
Application: ClaimSoft Marine Professional Edition
Problem Scope
Both companies provide claims adjusting services for large
Marine-associated incidents. The problem faced was the use of
outdated software to track the mountains of data associated with each claim,
such as the vessel(s), captain, owning company, the specifics of the incident
such as the person or persons involved and any litigation and how much money
was involved. Also, the data store needed to be faster and more robust, and
specific reports, such as a report for the Cost Guard called the USCG report,
and the Marine Information Bureau report (MIB) needed to be available from the
system. It had been the practice to generate these reports manually using forms
provided by the respective agencies.
In addition, there needed to be a way to export all the information
associated with a claim to a format that could be zipped and emailed to another
company using ClaimSoft. They would then be able to import that information
into their SQL Server database, and have up to date specifics on all
information associated with the claim.
Other features, such as personal calendars and correspondence tracking and the
ability to hook up a modem to one's computer and be able to fax documents
produced by the system were also required. The diary portion of the system had
to provide indicators of particular types of communication, types of
meetings etc and had to be only visible to the owner of the information.
Security was required that provided access to certain types of information by
certain groups of people and so a role-based security had to be tied to
all information that went into the system, or that was visible or reportable.
Spartan, Ltd was formed by one of the partners who left Polaris Group, and has
been using ClaimSoft ever since.
The Platform
The platform of the application was to be a rich windows client
application, using a SQL Server database as the data store. Using SQL Server
would provide the company with automatic backups, and much faster access to
data by multiple users. Visual Basic was used for creating the client, which
provided a simple and easy to use interface. Administrators could easiliy set
up new users and specify what modules users had permissions to view. It was
decided not to use the internet browser as the application's primary interface
platform, because information could be easily transferred, or if it was
necessary, users could log into their corporate system using a remote access
tool, and get as good, or better performance. Plus, this provided better
security for sensitive data.
Time Line
The application was developed using an Agile approach. The customers were
constantly involved, to help with the design and workflow of the application,
assist with checking data manipulation accuracy, and to insure that all
reports, and especially those required by government agencies were identical.
The application took approximately six months from first contact, until the
first version was deployed on site, and all data from their prior system was
moved over to the new system. Their previous system used an Access database,
and part of the scope included moving all information from the access database
to SQL Server.
Statement of Success
Since the application was deployed at Spartan, Ltd they have had no
problems with the system which is between four to five years of 100% uptime and
availability. Please see their reference located
here.
